The permeabilisation of linear infrastructures is essential to mitigate the fragmentation that new infrastructures cause on wildlife populations. Although in some locations specific wildlife passages can be constructed, usually drains are conditioned for use by fauna. A study was carried out in Catalonia (NE Spain) to identify the structural and environmental characteristics that have a significant influence on the use of a transversal structure as a wildlife passage. 56 transversal structures (potentially useful wildlife passages) were checked to determine their use; 39 were circular cross-section (from 1 to 3 m diameter) and 17 were rectangular cross-section (from 4 to 12 m wide) . Information was obtained by registering animal tracks on a marble powder bed and by using infra-red film cameras and photographic cameras. The preferences of the different taxonomic groups have been analyzed to facilitate the design of projects to condition transversal structures as wildlife passages. These preferences were shown to be remarkably different for each group. Small mammals and carnivores were the groups which were detected more frequently using the monitored structures. Ungulates present on the area (roe deer and wild boar) do not use the structures during the monitoring period. A specific survey cheking once a month the underpasses during one year established that wild boar used (but only ocasionally) structures more than 7 m wide.
