Forest fires

Forest fires constitute the main element of degradation of forest ecosystems, although the increase in the effectiveness of forest fire management in the last six years has counteracted their impact (IEPNB Sexennial Report 2020).

In matters of forest fires and in accordance with Law 43/2003 on Forests, the following powers correspond to the General Administration of the State, in collaboration with the autonomous communities:

  • Define the general objectives of the forestry policy regarding forest fires
  • Compile, prepare and systematize the General Forest Fire Statistics
  • Establish common guidelines on training in prevention and extinction
  • Standardize means and equipment for firefighting personnel throughout Spanish territory
  • Deploy state means of support to the autonomous communities and other countries, to cover forests against fires

It exclusively holds the international representation of Spain in matters of forest fires.
