The Working Group created following the declaration of the Cantabrian capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) as a critically endangered species presented the results of the first population estimate of the species today, Friday the 25th, in Oviedo. The study reveals that only 292 Cantabrian capercaillie specimens remain in a 350-square-kilometer distribution area in the Cantabrian mountain range. The data demonstrate the species' severe threat and the need to strengthen conservation measures by the various administrations, which are already working on field actions to improve individual survival and on the construction of a second captive breeding center in León, which will join the existing one in Asturias.
