Causas de la rarificación.

Among the causes of mortality of 88 otters, 14 (16%) were due to car casualties. Road casualties seem not to be a relevant factor of otter decrease, but chanelling streams, building dams and removal of riparian forest did play an important role. The authors have noticed the disappearance of this species downstream dams in accordance with the time of their construction. Reservoirs affect otters in several ways: 1) limiting water flow; 2) reducing the availability of eels (their favourite food) and other fishes that cannot surmount the obstacle posed by dams; 3) causing the disappearance of vegetation in reservoir shores, which is unable to survive due to frequent changes of water level. Moreover, otter cubs can drown inside the den as a consequence of quick increase of water level produced by water management in dams.

Entre las causas de la mortalidad de 88 ejemplares de nutria (Lutra lutra), 14 (16%) fueron debidas a los atropellos. Los atropellos no parecen ser un factor importante en el declive de la nutria y, en cambio, la canalización de los ríos, la construcción de presas y la eliminación del bosque de ribera puede haber jugado un papel significativo. Los autores han observado la desaparición de esta especie aguas abajo de de presas en función de su fecha de construcción. Los emblase afectan a la nutria en diversas maneras: 1) limitando el caudal de agua; 2) provocando una disminuación de la anguila (una presa preferida) y otros peces migratorios que no pueden salvar los obstáculos que significan las presas; 3) provocando la desaparición de la vegetación en las orillas del embalse, ya que no puede crecer por los frecuentes cambios del nivel del agua. Además, las crías de nutria pueden ser ahogados dentro de la madriguera por culpa de los bruscos cambios de nivel del agua producidos por la gestión del agua en los embalses.
