Informe provisional del seguimiento de la mortalidad de vertebrados en las carreteras de Cartagena.

Vertebrate mortality survey in roads of Cartagena (SE Spain). The surveyed roads were located roughly close to the coast. The most affected species were Passer domesticus, Phylloscopus collibyta, Erithacus rubecula, Rattus norvegicus, and Erinaceus europaeus. Hedgehogs were also affected by the changes in habitat use: dry to wet cereal crops. Roads close to wet habitat caused many deaths of endangered species attracted to water patches within a very dry matrix which dominates the landscape. The presence of the plant Inula viscosa which was used as perches by birds in the road verges increased the risk of birds to be killed. The behavioural response when facing a car explains the higher kills of hares (less abundant) compared with rabbits (much more abundant).

Se prospectaron carreteras en Cartagena (SE España) registrando los atropellos detectados. Las carreteras prospectadas se localizaban próximas a la costa. Las especies más afectadas fueron Passer domesticus, Phylloscopus collibyta, Erithacus rubecula, Rattus norvegicus, and Erinaceus europaeus. El erizo también resultó afectado por los cambios en el uso del hábitat: cambio de secano a regadío. Las carreteras próximas al ambiente húmedo provocaron muchos atropellos entre especies amenazadas atraídas por las manchas de agua situadas en medio de una matriz muy seca que domina el paisaje. La presencia de la planta Inula viscosa que fue utilizada por las aves como posadero en los márgenes de las carreteras aumentó el riesgo de atropello. El comportamiento de los liebres (menos abundantes) ante un vehículo explica su mayor incidencia de atropello que la que muestran los conejos (mucho más abundantes).
