Mortalidad de vertebrados en el Canal de las Dehesas.

Thirty-six km of this canal were surveyed from its interior during a year on a monthly basis. The aim was to assess the number of dead animals that could have drowned due to the design of the infrastructure (semi-circular section with a vertical upper part), and rescue those still alive. Amphibians (74,4%) were the most numerous (972 dead, 2448 alive), followed by reptiles (15,9%, 494 dead, 239 alive) and mammals (5,9%, 182 dead, 91 alive). Some crustaceans (3,4%) and birds (0.3%) were also found dead. Amphibians (and terrapins) can live and reproduce inside the channel, but they are bound to die in summer, when it carries no water. Caught amphibians also attract more individuals during the breeding season. Among reptiles, Mauremys leprosa was the most affected species. Almost no lizards were found and the channel might not be a barrier for them. Among ophidia, only juveniles of Natrix maura and N. natrix were observed, so they guess that adult can easily go out and that they may use the channel as a good hunting place. Rabbits, hedgehog and hares were the most abundant mammals. Mitigation measures to be taken especially while constructing the channel.
