Utilización de pasos específicos de fauna y mortandad asociada en un canal de los Páramos del norte de España (Guardo, Palencia).

A water canal of 24 km length crosses the moorlands of Guardo (Palencia) in northern Spain. The canal serves as a barrier to some mammal movement and an annual average of 44 to 80 animals are killed from drowning; mostly roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). In order to mitigate casualties, several overpasses and tunnels have been built. Narrow overpasses (2, 2.5 and 3.6m) are used by weasels (Mustelidae), foxes and dogs, but their effectiveness is poor in the case of wild ungulates. Wide overpasses (7,5m) are used by flocks of sheep, humans and vehicles. The frequent use of both types of passes by wild carnivores as well as for sheep, could make these unsuitable for wild ungulates. Although probably wider overpasses combined with vegetation will enhance animal crossing.

Un canal de 24km de longitud cruza los Páramos de Guardo en el Noroeste de Palencia. El canal es una barrera para el movimiento de los mamíferos y un promedio anual de 44 a 80 se encontraron ahogados en él entre 1994 y 1998, mayoritariamente corzos (Capreolus capreolus). Para reducir los ahogamientos de reses se construyeron una serie de pasarelas, puentes estrechos y túneles. Las pasarelas (de 2, 2,5, y 3,6 m) fueron frecuentadas habitualmente por mustélidos, zorros y perros, pero apenas por los ungulados silvestres, durante la primavera y el verano de 1998. Los puentes de obra (de 5 y 7,5 m) son muy utilizados por rebaños de ovejas, personas y vehículos. El frecuente uso de ambos tipo de puente por carnívoros silvestres, el tránsito humano y de rebaños de ovejas, y la escasa ocultación entre la vegetación natural podrían ser las posibles causas de su escasa efectividad para el cruce por los ungulados hacia la ribera del Carrión. Probablemente, pasarelas específicas para la fauna, más anchas y combinadas con vegetación serían más utilizadas por estos mamíferos.
