SAFE, Stop Wildlife Accidents in Spain

The number of accidents caused by animals entering the road has skyrocketed in recent years. There were around 29,000 accidents in 2019 and there was a slight reduction during 2020. But there are many more animals hit by roadkill that are not recorded. Data are available from a survey carried out in Spain by the Society for the Conservation of Vertebrates in 2003 and data from some autonomous communities. In 2020, this Ministry began work to carry out new surveys with citizen science in order to evaluate fauna mortality due to road accidents.
