Forest genetic resources

Knowledge of the genetic resources of our natural heritage is essential for its proper use, protection and conservation. In particular, when talking about genetic resources that are going to be used directly for the improvement and renewal of the environment, such as forests, it is necessary to properly manage their genetic diversity, in such a way that their adaptive capacity is promoted and their evolutionary potential.

It focuses its objectives on the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources in Spain, preserving their capacity for evolution and guaranteeing their use for future generations. In compliance with such objectives, the establishment of a series of tools and measures is proposed (National Network of Genetic Testing, Network Germplasm Bank, National Centers for Genetic Resources, etc.) that will facilitate the development of the National Plans.

  • National Conservation Plan
  • National Plan for Forest Genetic Improvement
  • National Plan for Endangered Populations
  • Strategy Monitoring Plan

The component called Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) provides comprehensive knowledge of these resources, their improvement, conservation and sustainable use, through the processing of information related to the populations, plantations and clones from which the material used is obtained. to be used for repopulation; on the amount of material that is collected and from which plant is produced; and on the way of conservation of forest genetic resources.

The cataloging of forest genetic resources is carried out through the National Registry and Catalog of Base Materials that includes natural populations, plantations and clones that provide reproduction material (fruits, seeds and plant parts) for the multiplication of forest species. particularly for forestry.

Furthermore, with the recent publication of Royal Decree 159/2022, of March 1, new instruments are regulated for the in situ and ex situ conservation of forest genetic resources that will be incorporated into this component: Germplasm Banks and Conservation Units In situ genetics.
