In accordance with Law 42/2007, of December 13, on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity , Protected Natural Spaces are considered to be those "spaces of the national territory, including continental waters and maritime waters under national sovereignty or jurisdiction, including the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf, which meet at least one of the following requirements and are declared as such:

  • Contain representative, unique, fragile, threatened natural systems or elements or of special ecological, scientific, landscape, geological or educational interest.
  • Be especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, geodiversity and associated natural and cultural resources.

State Legislation provides for five protection figures (Parks, Natural Reserves, Marine Protected Areas, Natural Monuments, Protected Landscapes); The regional legislation relating to nature conservation increases the denominations, raising the typology of natural spaces to more than 40.
